Specialty Coffee And Its Benefits: A three part series Pt1
Part I
For several people, their day begins with a cup of coffee. This is, in most cases, what jolts their body into action at the start of the day. If you have a routine of always taking at least a cup of coffee in the morning, you are not alone. Around the world, the coffee industry is one of the most important industries that get people going in the morning and help their productivity.
The coffee brands you love so much get their coffee beans from tropical regions all over the world. These coffee brands go to great lengths to get you that exact coffee flavor that keeps your efficiency and energy level high through the course of the day.
Specialty Coffee
We all love a particular brew of coffee. These brews of coffee can fit right into two broad categories: Specialty coffee and commercial coffee.
From your average consumer standpoint, the immediate major difference between commercial coffee and specialty coffee is the packaging. Commercial coffee is an instant-grounded coffee that comes in a to-go package. It could be a tin bottle or an enclosed plastic container. On the other hand, specialty coffee comes in the coffee bean form. You can get it in 12oz to one-pound bags or in bulk where you will still need to grind and brew it yourself.
According to the Specialty Coffee Association (SCA), specialty coffee is any coffee that scores 80 or above on the coffee grading scale. The quality measure is what determines the coffee score of the specialty coffee. One of the great benefits you get when you buy specialty coffee is the opportunity to be part of the creation process of making your coffee.
Growing Specialty Coffee
The specialty coffee largely is a coffee concept with numerous stages. These crucial stages are very important to bring out the special potential of the coffee. Missing any of these stages might ruin this perfect coffee blend. Here are the stages the specialty coffee goes through
- Ground level: Specialty coffee requires an ideal condition for its growth. If the wrong soil is where the seeds are planted, it will most likely lead to a reduction in the quality.
- Ripeness: the optimal time to harvest the coffee beans is another crucial part of the process. Picking your coffee beans at the right time enables coffee growers to get the optimal output from their harvest
- Delivery time: there is a window for delivering the coffee beans from the field to the mill. This is another vital part of the process. To preserve that freshness and potential of retaining the specialty coffee quality, this time window must be kept
- Processing Stage: removing the coffee bean skin and drying the beans is another important stage. The skin removal and drying process make the coffee beans ready for the transformation stage. If the beans are unevenly dried or not properly skinned, it reduces the quality of the coffee beans.
